Hi, I’m Galen.

I’m a researcher, journalist, photographer, and educator from California who’s spent more than a decade working in Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam, Haiti, and Cambodia.

I recently received my Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University, based on three years of dissertation fieldwork conducted inside the Indonesian film industry. Prior to that, I’d worked in documentary photography, as well as media arts education, development, and production.

I’m motivated by curiosity, not as an end in itself, but as a catalyst for fostering wider and more nuanced perspectives on an impossibly complex world.
